SILVER CITY — October 23, 2020 — Yearout Energy, an Energy Services Company (ESCO) headquartered in Albuquerque, announced that they have begun work on a $6.9M project with Western New Mexico University (WNMU). The project will help decrease energy and water utility costs, reduce the University’s carbon footprint, and increase the amount of onsite renewable energy generated across campus.
Yearout Energy performed an investment grade audit (IGA) across the entire WNMU campus to identify and co-develop facility improvement measures that would allow the university to leverage future utility and operational savings through a Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contract (GESPC).
“Between the facility upgrades, the savings, and optimization of energy performance this project is a win-win for students, faculty and staff across campus,” said Kevin Matthes, WNMU associate vice president of facilities and operations.
WNMU is projected to save $211,274 in utilities and $12,818 in operations and maintenance costs in the first year alone. WNMU is also estimated to receive $75,000 in rebates from their utility providers. The project is expected to deliver a total annual utility cost reduction of 22 percent from current expenditures. These cost savings will be used to self-fund the campus-wide improvements included in the project scope.
“We are excited to assist WNMU implement measures that can help them upgrade their facilities and reduce their energy consumption,” said Ryan Jewell, business development manager for Yearout Energy.
The measures selected for implementation comprise:
● Complete overhaul of the electrical and mechanical systems at Harlan Hall;
● Upgrade approximately 8,500 existing lighting fixtures to LED;
● Install 420 kW DC of new solar photovoltaic carports;
● Upgrade domestic water fixtures and irrigation controls to conserve water;
● Upgrade kitchen ventilation controls to optimize energy performance;
● Upgrade over 1,500 kVA of low voltage transformers to high efficiency units;
● Remediate over 140 square feet of leaks in the existing building envelopes.
